Founded in late 2014, The Big Music Society is a multi-platform musical venture founded by John Mulhearn and Calum MacCrimmon (Breabach, Man’s Ruin) as a vehicle for the exploration of Ceòl Mòr on the modern stage.
Ceòl Mòr or pibroch, as it is commonly called, is often considered to be the ‘classical’ music of the highland pipes. It is a rich musical heritage that reaches back centuries. In recent times this music has been almost exclusively performed by solo competitive pipers.
Inspired by a small number of trailblazers – among them Allan MacDonald and Martyn Bennett – the BMS seek to broaden the appeal of a music that is often seen as stuffy and elitist. Over the course of a number of highly successful collaborations, productions and commissions John and Calum’s project has started to carve an important niche.
